Put this together and you can try riffs that go over multiple strings keeping the proper alt picking technique.įrom there you could realistically play most Buckethead rhythm sections as they're mostly power chords or similar enough. You can then try to play each note in a chord one at a time, again try both down picking and alt picking. When you get used to the feel try single string riffs both down picked and alt picked. Make sure you're strumming both up and down, you don't want to limit yourself with your picking direction especially for Buckethead. Don't worry about pick accuracy just now. To start out I would say to just try strumming chords or hitting power chords to get used to holding it properly and hitting the strings consistently. Both have their uses but alt picking is important to do properly so check some YouTube tutorials on that. There are two ways to hit notes with a pick, down picking only or alternating (alt picking). (Between your thumb and first index knuckle.) Up to you though just be aware of the feeling differences.Īlso important to make sure you're holding the pick correctly as it will give you the most control the fastest. I use 0.8-1 mm picks which you can strum with fine but feel more solid when hitting individual notes. Light picks (0.4 mm ish) would be mostly for chords and strumming. There are various thickness picks for different reasons. For playing with a pick it will initially feel awkward as with anything new so don't be disheartened!
